Ian Machado Garry believes a showdown with Khamzat Chimaev is inevitable.

Garry is rising up the welterweight ranks under the UFC banner. Chimaev has been making a strong push for UFC gold, competing at 170 pounds and 185 pounds. The belief among MMA fans is that “Borz” will be sticking with middleweight going forward. His next outing will be at that weight class, as he’ll be taking on Paulo Costa at UFC 294 on October 21.

Ian Machado Garry vs. Khamzat Chimaev

Ian Machado Garry recently made an appearance on “The Craic.” During the interview, Garry told Petesy Carroll that he has no doubt he’ll fight Khamzat Chimaev one day, but not at this time.

“I don’t wanna fight him right now,” Garry said. “He’s up at 185 and he’s not coming back down, but there’s a future. There’s stuff that’s gonna happen in the future. That guy is f*cking legit. He’s as legit as legit comes, but everybody keeps talking about him like he’s this f*cking boogeyman. Sweet, cool. I’ll see you in a couple of years, I’ll see you at 185 and we’ll see who the boogeyman is.”

For now, Garry is focused on climbing the ladder at welterweight. He’s already targeted Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson as his next opponent. UFC President Dana White claimed Thompson turned the fight down. Whether or not “Wonderboy” and “The Future” will eventually throw down remains to be seen.

Garry’s stock continues to rise. He’s fresh off a dominant unanimous decision victory over Neil Magny. The victory improved Garry’s pro MMA record to 13-0. He also moved up to the number 11 spot on the official UFC welterweight rankings.

It’s clear that Garry is likely due for a top 10 opponent in his next outing. It certainly won’t get any easier for the Irishman going forward, but he certainly doesn’t seem to lack in confidence.
