Gilbert Burns has shared some thoughts on the UFC’s delay in booking Leon Edwards vs. Colby Covington, as well as a prediction.

Edwards, the reigning UFC welterweight champion, was last seen successfully defending his gold back in March against Kamaru Usman. UFC CEO Dana White has long said that Edwards vs. Covington is the next move to make. Edwards called for the bout to take place at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi, but that card has been filled. Covington claimed the fight was going to happen at UFC 295, but the event’s headliner Jon Jones had him removed from the event due to their beef.

Gilbert Burns On Leon Edwards vs. Colby Covington Holdup

Our own Mike Owens spoke to Gilbert Burns in a Middle Easy exclusive. During the interview, Burns appeared to be just as puzzled as everyone else regarding the Edwards vs. Covington situation.

“I don’t know what’s the holdup, especially that both guys look like free injury,” Burns said. “At first, I remember Leon was saying he don’t wanna fight in London. They wanted to do it in July, but he would like to fight in Abu Dhabi. That was October, and then October fight is now scheduled, November is now scheduled. I don’t know, I’m hoping they fight to December. But yeah, I don’t know why. I would like to know, too.”

Did Belal Muhammad Deserve UFC Title Shot More?

Owens then asked Burns if he feels Muhammad should’ve had the championship opportunity over Covington. “Durinho” made his answer clear.

“I don’t think Colby deserves [the UFC welterweight title shot],” Burns said. “Belal’s the next one there with him. I still think UFC’s gonna make Colby vs. Leon, even though he doesn’t deserve, but they’re still gonna do it.”

Leon Edwards vs. Colby Covington Prediction

Burns went on to heap praise on Edwards, and gave a prediction for the Covington fight.

“I think Leon Edwards will win any day of the week,” Burns said. “I think he has way better striking, very sharp striking. Super, super good striking with the managing the distance, controlling wrestling defense, his wrestling defense got so much better, and his grappling is super underrated. I think Leon Edwards is very, very good. Because he doesn’t fight so often, people kind of underrate him a little bit, but I think he’s very good. He’ll beat Colby and he will beat Belal Muhammad.”
