Derrick Lewis Thinks His UFC 229 KO Punch Was Worth $1 Million

After a terrible performance versus Francis Ngannou at UFC 226, Derrick Lewis was looking for the way to regain his honor. He faced one of the most dangerous strikers, Alexander Volkov, at UFC 229, on October 6, 2018. Drago controlled the fight for two rounds. Yet, The Black Beast delivered brutal right hand that ended the fight in the third. It was one of the most spectacular comebacks.

“It’s probably a million,” Lewis said. “Probably about a million.”

Derrick Lewis got a chance to face Daniel Cormier at the main event of UFC 230. After his fantastic promo video, he won the hearts of many UFC fans. Lewis’ regained his popularity overnight. His Instagram account reached 1.4 million followers. Many celebrities started praising Derrick Lewis on social media. Take a look at Lil Wayne’s tweet below.

Derrick Lewis made a comparison between his possible income at UFC 230 and the other three fights he had in 2018. Let’s remember – he earned 260,000 dollars at UFC 226. He was rewarded with 320,000 dollars at UFC 229. He earned around 300,000 dollars at UFC Fight Night 126. It is a total of $880,000. Yet, it looks like UFC 230 showdown versus DC will add one more zero to his bill.

“It’s probably more than I made this year already,” Lewis said.

Derrick Lewis says he takes the fight versus Daniel Cormier very seriously. He trains a lot more nowadays. The Black Beast has never been a cardio machine. But you never know what might be changed.

“Not just the title on the line, whenever I saw my contract and see the zeroes, I was like, ‘OK, I can start training now,’” Lewis said. “Before, like I told y’all before, I don’t stay in the gym like everyone else does, my opponents. It’s pretty obvious, after the fight I’m laying all over the floor, I’m tired. Ready to go sit my ass down somewhere.

“But this fight right here, I’ve really been training all day long. Drinking more water than I need to be drinking. Really taking it more serious. There’s not gonna be no excuses for myself — win, lose or draw.”

The Black Beast thinks Cormier doesn’t take him seriously, and he is thrilled by that. According to Derrick Lewis, DC was talking about their showdown as an easy pick. It could cost him a lot.

“Not really the UFC, just DC believes that,” said Lewis, who added that he will be 100 percent for the title fight, despite a hard bout against Volkov. “He’s thinking it’s gonna be an easy fight for his self. But go ahead and think that. It’s just crazy that I even made it this far with the type of training I’ve been putting in before each and every fight. I’m serious. I don’t stay in the gym all day like all my opponents do. I stay for 30 minutes, 35 minutes — and five minutes on my phone posting memes and stuff. But this camp right here, I’ve been really at the gym all day long.”

Derrick Lewis confirmed he does many things in the gym he has never even taught about earlier. He is highly motivated. This is the biggest fight in his career.

According to Derrick Lewis, there are many fighters who deserved a title shot more than him. Stipe Miocic is one of them. But UFC Heavyweight title fight is an offer you can’t refuse.

“It’s just one that I can’t pass up, because I know there’s a lot of guys in this division that probably deserve a shot more than I’m getting,” Lewis said. “I probably don’t deserve a shot more than Stipe, who should have got the shot. But ain’t no telling the next time I’m gonna get the opportunity, so I gotta jump on it anyways.”

Do you think Derrick Lewis can put Daniel Cormier to sleep? After all, he has such a power in his right hand. But if he clinches up DC, he might have a hard time. Just remember Cormier’s fight with Stipe Miocic and that outstanding clinch KO!
