Colby Covington Dominates Jorge Masvidal To Win Grudge Match – UFC 272 Results (Highlights)

Covington came out on top in his grudge match with Masvidal after a dominant performance over five rounds in the UFC 272 headliner.

A welterweight headliner between Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal is taking place now (Saturday, Mar. 5, 2022) at UFC 272.

Round 1

Masvidal opens with a flying front kick which misses. Masvidal lands a couple of leg kicks. Covington misses an overhand left. Masvidal connects with another leg kick. Masvidal complains of an eye poke but the referee lets it continue. Covington shoots. Masvidal defends but is taken down eventually. Masvidal is back to his feet but remains controlled. Covington has taken the back and threatens with a choke but doesn’t appear intent on going for the submission. Masvidal remains controlled but is not taking heavy damage. Masvidal gets to his feet and they eventually separate. Masvidal connects with a body kick. Both fighters exchange as the round ends.

Round 2

Covington slips after his head kick attempt is blocked. Masvidal lands a nice low kick. He follows it up with another. Covington misses with a left and sees his head kick slipped. Masvidal starts jabbing and continues with a kick-heavy game. Covington shoots again and has Masvidal clinched against the fence. Masvidal lands some hard elbows. Covington loses the position after a low blow. The action resumes and Covington lands a right. Covington lands a left soon after and goes for the takedown. Masvidal lands a knee and separates. Masvidal is landing some big shots now. Covington lands some punches but slips. He goes for the takedown and now has control of Masvidal’s back. Masvidal gets to his feet and separates quickly. Covington is having success with some jabs and continues to clinch him up. Masvidal separates. Masvidal lands some leg kicks and knee to the body but eats some shots from Covington as the round ends.

Round 3

Covington blocks a big head kick. Covington goes for a takedown but it’s defended by Masvidal. Covington starts jabbing Masvidal and backing him before getting another takedown. Covington is now in Masvidal’s guard for the first time and is throwing strikes. Covington is landing some big elbows. Masvidal explodes a bit but remains controlled. Masvidal explodes again and is in a position to take Covington down. However, Covington scrambles and takes his back again. Covington lands a knee to the body. Masvidal gets to his feet and lands a left. He ends the round with a right hand.

Round 4

Covington shoots again but Masvidal defends. Covington continues to throw strikes and has Masvidal against the fence. Covington lands a big shot as he remains in control. Masvidal separates. Covington lands a left. Covington lands a flurry of strikes as Masvidal laughs it off. They separate. Masvidal drops Covington with a huge counter right! Masvidal looks to go on the offensive but he is clearly fatigued. Covington eventually recovers and clinches him up. Masvidal separates with 20 seconds remaining in the round. Masvidal partially lands with a spinning back kick to the body. 

Round 5

Covington lands a big left and goes for the takedown. Covington gets it and is in the half guard. Covington spins and takes his back. Masvidal is back to his feet but Covington has his back still. Covington is wearing on Masvidal who looks to have given up. Covington is landing shots repeatedly. Masvidal tries to scramble but Covington remains in control. Covington now appears to go for the finish with a choke. Masvidal gets out of it and receives ground and pound strikes to end the fight. 

Official Result: Colby Covington defeats Jorge Masvidal via unanimous decision (49-46, 50-44, 50-45).
