The UFC 288 main card bout between Charles Oliveira and Beneil Dariush is in jeopardy.

The UFC is returning to New Jersey in a little under a month with the UFC 288 fight card. This is the first time the UFC has brought a PPV card to the Newark area since UFC 169, the last few cards there have been Fight Night events. Just a few weeks from fight night, the card has lost one of its biggest bouts. According to reports by ESPN, Charles Oliveira has been injured and his fight with Beneil Dariush must be rescheduled.

There is no word yet on the severity of Oliveira’s injury. In light of this news, the UFC is not looking to replace Oliveira in this bout but instead, push it back to another card.

The injury to Charles Oliveira takes the lightweight contender bout off of UFC 288 fight card

Oliveira is a former champion who is trying to get his title back. He had a tough run so far since winning his belt back in 2021. He defended his title once and then was stripped of the belt after failing to make weight for his UFC 274 fight against Justin Gaethje. He later lost his title fight to Islam Makhachev at UFC 280. This fight against Dariush was meant to get him back in title contention and hopefully set him up once again opposite Makhachev.

Dariush was coming into this fight having won his last eight. He is currently ranked fourth in the division and has been calling for a shot at Makhachev as well. It took a while for this fight to come to fruition as many of the top five fighters in the division feel as if they should be next for the champ. If Dariush chooses not to wait for Oliveira, he might be able to find another top-five opponent, or simply skip the line to the top.

Right now the only top-five fighter in the lightweight division that has a fight pending is Michael Chandler. He will be facing Conor McGregor later this year. Champion Makhachev is not slated to return at this time but perhaps could be available in the summer.
