Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez will be cornering for the first time since being arrested.
Velasquez was arrested back in March of 2022 when he allegedly shot at a man who was recently charged with molesting a close relative of his. However, Velasquez apparently missed that man, and his bullet hit the defendant’s stepfather.
After the incident, Velasquez was facing 10 charges including attempted murder; shooting at an occupied motor vehicle or aircraft; three counts of assault with a firearm; three counts of assault with a deadly weapon; willfully discharging a firearm from a vehicle, and carrying a loaded firearm with intent to commit a felony. If he is found guilty of attempted murder he faces a minimum of 20 years and up to life in prison, with additional time being added for the other charges, if found guilty.
Following months in jail, Cain Velasquez was finally awarded bail and has been out for nearly a year. Yet, part of his bail was that he had travel restrictions and needed to wear a GPS-tracking device.
California Commission confirms Cain Velasquez will be in a corner
But, Velasquez was able to get a court order to wrestle in Arizona, and now, has received a court order to corner teammate Usman Nurmagomedov at Bellator 300, according to MMAFighting. The event is set to take place on Oct. 7 at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, California.
“He is scheduled to corner,” California State Athletic Commission executive director Andy Foster said in a text sent to MMA Fighting about Cain Velasquez cornering Usman Nurmagomedov. “We are in possession of a court order permitting him to do so.”
The news was exciting for many MMA fans who will get to see Cain Velasquez back in a corner and helping out his teammates for their fights. Before getting arrested, Velasquez had cornered multiple fights for his teammates at AKA.
Usman Nurmagomedov is looking to defend his Bellator lightweight title for the second time. He’s currently 17-0 as a pro and coming off a stoppage win over Benson Henderson.
