Gilbert Burns doesn’t think Jorge Masvidal has the best mentality ahead of their fight.

Masvidal’s Mindset

In the lead-up to the UFC 287 co-main event, Masvidal has teased he could retire, should he lose to Burns on Saturday.

“This could be the last one,” Masvidal said on UFC Countdown. “If I lose, I’m pretty much calling it quits. But a win against Gilbert means that things are headed in the right direction. So, if I roll the dice, and I do everything right, I’m going for it all. For one title or many titles.”

‘I Just Don’t Think That’s A Good Look’

Burns has caught wind of Masvidal’s ‘last dance’ comments and doesn’t think it’s a good idea for him to have retirement on the back of his mind, especially so close to their matchup.

“When [Masvidal] said that, personally, I would never say going to a fight if anything happens, I’m retired because I just don’t think that’s a good look,” Burns said on Morning Kombat. “I heard a couple guys say, ‘oh, if I win, I retire’ and these guys always lose.

“So, I’m not gonna be that guy that not if, whatever happens, happens. But first of all, me personally, I don’t like that look in saying if something happen, I’m retiring. So he’s already thinking about it and I wanna remind [him] that on the fight.”

Despite ‘Gamebred’ already contemplating retirement if he loses, Burns isn’t taking the 51-fight veteran any more lightly.

“But he’s a danger,” Burns said of Masvidal. “I think he’s saying that, he gonna throw everything on me. I just believe he want to start hard… I think he going to start like crazy like he did with Kamaru [Usman] in the first fight, gonna try to get me out of there in the beginning. I like it if he comes like that, but I don’t think because he has 51 fights a lot, he’s a veteran, a lot of experience, but I don’t see. I see him coming very aggressive. So with that being said, if he lose, he retire, I think he gonna try everything on his power to beat me and then I’m more than ever.

“I still think when Leon [Edwards] beat Kamaru, there was extra motivation to Masvidal to beat me and try to get a title shot and I like that. I like the extra motivator. Best Masvidal, that’s the one that I want to face.”
