Belal Muhammad is fine not fighting again until 2024.
Muhammad stepped up on short notice at UFC 288 and picked up a one-sided decision win over Gilbert Burns. After the victory, Dana White announced Muhammad would get the winner of Leon Edwards vs. Colby Covington, but Muhammad is hoping the UFC eventually passes up Covington and gives him the next title shot.
“We are guaranteed a title shot, we just have to wait (and see) what happens with these two dorks, Colby and Leon,” Muhammad said to The Schmo. “There is nothing coming from it so for me, it’s like I’m hoping Dana is realizing we got this guy that is actually fighting, a guy that took a fight on three weeks’ notice, a guy that came off the couch, a guy that dominated a ranked opponent on two weeks notice during Ramadan, we called him and needed him and he showed up. So maybe we will give him a title shot in Abu Dhabi which Leon wants which makes the most sense in the world. I’m hoping that is what happens but you never know.”
‘If I have to Wait, I’ll Wait’
As of right now, Dana White is adamant that Colby Covington is fighting for the belt next and will likely face Leon Edwards in October in Abu Dhabi.
If the title fight does indeed happen in October, Belal Muhammad knows that means he will be out until 2024, but he is fine with that. He believes the longer he gets to train, the better he will be and the more dominant the fight will be for him.
“For me, I’m always training and always getting better. You get to this point in your career where it’s like the goal was to get to the title shot, to get to the belt. They guaranteed me (that) if I beat Gilbert I get it next, if I have to wait, I’ll wait, I’ll continue getting better, it’s only going to get worse for Colby or Leon whichever one of them guys is next,” Muhammad added.
Belal Muhammad is currently back in the gym training and is ready to step in should something happen to Leon Edwards vs. Colby Covington.
