UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski has reacted to the conclusion of UFC 292.
Volkanovski watching the event live and posted a new video on his YouTube channel with his reaction to the card. Specifically, he touched on the main event bantamweight title fight between Aljamain Sterling and Sean O’Malley. Sterling planned to call out Volkanovski if he emerged victorious over O’Malley.
Things didn’t go Sterling’s way on fight night, however. He was stopped in the bout via second-round TKO and now O’Malley is the 135-pound king.
Alexander Volkanovski On Aljamain Sterling’s Title Loss
In the aforementioned video, Alexander Volkanovski reacted to Sterling’s defeat at the hands of O’Malley and what could be next for the “Funk Master.”
“Gotta feel for Aljo,” Volkanovski said. “I mean, what does he wanna do? He’s definitely gonna want that rematch ’cause it’s a big fight.”
One thing appears to be certain, and it’s that a matchup between Sterling and Volkanovski will not be happening anytime soon.
“Oh yeah, that’s not happening,” Volkanovski said. “You never know. If he would’ve had a big win he could’ve taken Ilia’s spot, you know?”
Volkanovski shared that he thinks Sterling is deserving of a rematch with O’Malley. “The Great” believes it would be better if Sterling waits for O’Malley to potentially fight “Chito” Vera so he can work on some things to be better prepared for O’Malley. The “Sugar” show has already brushed off giving Sterling an immediate rematch.
The featherweight champion also said that if Sterling had beaten O’Malley, he may have jumped the line for a shot at the 145-pound gold. Volkanovski insists that top featherweight contender Ilia Topuria has been quiet as of late. Volkanovski even gave an injury update, saying he can post on his elbow again and plans to throw punches with it in the future.
