Devin Haney is going for even more gold.
The undefeated former lightweight champion relinquished his title in November after a pair of successful title defenses against George Kambosos Jr. and Vasiliy Lomachenko.
In his next task, Haney will challenge WBC Junior Welterweight Champion Regis Prograis in a pay-per-view headliner.
This marks Prograis’ second title defense, with his first coming against Danielito Zorrilla in June. The champ will look to follow that up with a win over Haney.
The championship main event takes place from The Chase Center in San Francisco, California.
Round 1:
Both men test out their jab from a distance. Haney’s jab lands multiple times. Prograis attacks to the body. Prograis goes again to the body but Haney returns with a punch to the head. Haney swings big but misses. Haney gets off a punch to the body. Prograis fires more jabs before the round ends.
Round 2:
Prograis follows jabs with a solid uppercut. Haney throws a left hook. Both fighters trade punches in the pocket. Haney hits Prograis with a right cross. Prograis counters with Haney with a left hand. Haney lands an uppercut. Prograis loses his balance coming in and falls down, getting back up to his feet.
Round 3:
Prograis hits the body. Prograis goes for haymakers over the top but just misses. Haney puts together combos, finally dropping Prograis with a punch. Prograis stands back up and the fight continues.
Haney unloads and Prograis clinches up in reaction. They separate. Haney works the body after going upstairs. Haney stings Prograis with a jab. Haney throws a left hook.
Round 4:
Prograis presses forward, utilizing the jab. Haney is speedy in his entries, going to the head and then landing to the body effectively. Prograis eats multiple jabs. Prograis lands a short punch to the body. Haney continues to find a home for his left hand. Haney lands a crisp 1-2 on Prograis. Haney lands a body shot before the bell.
Round 5:
Prograis enters the fifth round aggressively. Haney is elusive in his movement, not letting Prograis have much progress. A couple of body shots land for Haney. Haney finds a lot of success with his left hand. Haney counters beautifully with punches as Prograis comes in. Haney unloads on Prograis with even more combos.
Round 6:
Haney hits Prograis with an uppercut. The lightning-fast Haney fires the jab. Haney throws a right cross before going to the body. Prograis lands a jab. Prograis eats a right hand from Haney. Haney rocks Prograis with a huge right hand. Prograis stands his ground in the middle of the ring. Haney lands a left hand.
Round 7:
Haney works the jab. Prograis steps forward only to eat another jab from Haney. Haney’s right hand lands heavy. Haney’s body shots get through. Prograis lands a jab. Jab after jab lands for Haney. Haney cracks Prograis with a right hand to end the round.
Round 8:
Prograis keeps the pressure on Haney. Haney hits Prograis with a left hand. Prograis looks to land to the body, but doesn’t find much success. Haney goes for the 1-2. Haney works behind the jab still.
Round 9:
Prograis lands a big punch to the body of Haney. The referee paused the action momentarily due to a shoe disfunction from Haney. The fight resumes. Haney hits Prograis with the right hand repeatedly. Prograis is staggered by Haney’s punches, nearly going down to the canvas. The champ somehow stays up on his feet and survives the rest of the round.
Round 10:
Haney’s jab proves to be successful yet again in the 10th round. They clinch and then separate. Prograis lands a left hand before they enter and exit the clinch. Haney hits Prograis with a right hand. The boxers go into the clinch once more. In the final seconds of the round, Prograis chases Haney but isn’t able to catch up to his fast target.
Round 11:
Haney works all of his angles in facing Prograis, showcasing great footwork. Prograis hits the body. Prograis lands to the body again in a short stint. Haney’s jabs don’t stop landing.
Round 12:
Prograis tries to make something big happen in the final round. Prograis clinches with Haney, landing a shot up top despite the referee’s orders to separate. Haney lands an uppercut. Prograis puts his foot on the gas, only to be countered by Haney just about every step of the way. Both fighters swing big late but miss on their final shots of the contest.
