Boxing icon Floyd Mayweather revealed that a rematch with UFC superstar Conor McGregor is in the works for 2023.
On September 25th, Mayweather heads to Saitama Super Arena in Japan to face Mikuru Asakura, an MMA fighter as part of the RIZIN 38 card. Once that fight is in the books, Mayweather already has his next payday lined in up November when he will face British YouTube star Deji in an exhibition bout scheduled to take place in Dubai.
As reported by Sportsmail in an exclusive interview, ‘Money’ dropped the bombshell that a rematch with McGregor was in the works for 2023 with the only thing left to determine if it will be an exhibition bout or a professional fight.
“I want to go out there this weekend and have fun [against Mikuru Asakura]. Then I have another exhibition Dubai in November and me and Conor McGregor in 2023. We don’t know if it’s going to be an exhibition or a real fight. But there’s been talks of both. I would prefer an exhibition.”
Floyd Mayweather Has No Interest In Fighting Professionally
When Floyd Mayweather was questioned as to why he preferred an exhibition bout versus a professional contest, ‘Money’ said that it all comes down to staying out of situations where he is going to take damage.
“So, guys like Conor McGregor and guys that don’t really hit hard such as YouTubers or UFC guys, I don’t really mind colliding with those kinds of individuals but nothing where I am going to put myself in a position where I am going to harm myself or hurt myself.”
Their first meeting in 2017 would be Floyd Mayweather’s final professional fight. ‘Money’ earned a 10th round TKO over ‘Notorious’ moving his professional record to 50-0 before officially retiring. ‘Money’ has since competed against Tenshin Nasukawa, Logan Paul, and Don Moore in exhibition bouts.
As for Conor McGregor, the Irishman hasn’t been the same since his loss to Mayweather. The former champ-champ has lost three of his last four outings in the Octagon. McGregor has been out of action since July 2021 when he broke his leg in the first round of his trilogy bout with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264.
