After over 20 years in the fight game, UFC welterweight contender Jorge Masvidal has called it a career. Colby Covington is taking responsibility for Jorge Masvidal’s retirement from MMA
Covington and Masvidal have a long and drama-filled history. The two fought last year at UFC 272 in Las Vegas. Following that bout, they were involved in an altercation on the streets of Miami. That altercation led to some arrests and a pending lawsuit between Covington and Masvidal. Now in the week of his retirement, Covington is speaking with Submission Radio about how he feels he was the one to retire Masvidal.
“If I want to get my honest take, I mean, he was retired after I beat him, he’s a broken man,” he said. “There’s a reason that he came out and did what he did to me in the streets like a little clown. There’s no pride in that guy. So he just didn’t want to have to live the rest of his life knowing that he retired off of getting his ass beat by me. So of course, he’s gonna come and lose to somebody else in the division because he just, he didn’t want that being hung over his head. I retired him but guys, I’ll be honest, I retired Jorge Masvidal, Street Judas in 2022 in T-Mobile Arena.”
Prior to the fight against Burns, Masvidal was toying with the idea of fighting for a title had he won. Now that he has lost and is out of the mix, Covington will be the next man to fight for the welterweight title when he takes on Leon Edwards later this year. That fight is being targeted for London in July.
