Tyron Woodley Says UFC Failed To Rope Black Fans In The Promotion Of Him As A Champ

Tyron Woodley: “I Think As An Organization We Failed To Get Me To Grab The Market”

Tyron Woodley believes he didn’t get any help from UFC in roping black fans in the promotion of him as a UFC Welterweight champion. T-Wood returned after 14 months of absence and won the title! Woodley is the champ since July 30, 2016. It makes him the longest-reigning current UFC’s division winner.

The UFC’s promotion of Tyron Woodley has again reached the headlines. In his recent interview with Sway’s Universe, The Chosen One stated that UFC failed to secure black fans for him. (via MMAMania.com)

“This sport is trying to be parallel with NFL, MLB, and all these other sports, you wanna be taken seriously,” Woodley said. “You got people who wanna **** with the sport, but they think MMA is a whole bunch of crazy white people beating each other’s *** with a sprinkle of a few brothers. But it’s my job to get the people from the barbershop, to bring over the Mayweather fans, and I think as an organization we failed to get me to grab that market.”

Yet, Tyron Woodley forgot the fact his two title fights were possibly the most boring UFC Welterweight title showdowns. He defeated Stephen Thompson at UFC 209 on March 4, 2017, via majority decision. But both fighters were cautious and the fight was tactical. At UFC 214 on July 29, 2017, versus Demian Maia, he tore the labrum in his right shoulder in the first round. Despite he won via unanimous decision, the fight was everything but interesting to watch. T-Wood had to undergo surgery later due to this injury.

T-Wood was very dominant against Darren Till. He didn’t let him land a single dangerous punch. Woodley won the title easily at UFC 228 at September 8, 2018, via D’Arce choke in the second round. T-Wood was holding him on the ground and punching all the time. You can say this was one hell of a great title match!

Woodley was pretty much exposed to racist attacks in social networks. Especially when he called himself “The Chosen One”. That move irritated many fans. Many of them were “rewarding him” with the most destructive insults. But don’t forget Tyron Woodley has already blamed racism as a reason for his bad promotion by UFC!

Tyron Woodley recently released new rap song with Wiz Khalifa. Maybe this was a desperate move to get more popular among the fans. After all, nobody knows whether the project of attracting Mayweather fans will be successful. Instead of coming up with excuses and using racism as a shield, maybe he should start repeating UFC 228 performance. Fans want fighters who fight until the last bell, not tactical experts. What are your thoughts on this? Do you blame Tyron Woodley or UFC?
