  • Tom Aspinall finds the UFC’s decision to hand Colby Covington a title shot a bit “strange”
  • The UFC heavyweight contender talked about a “conspiracy theory” behind the matter

UFC heavyweight contender Tom Aspinall is not completely sold on the idea that Colby Covington is the rightful title contender in the welterweight division. Based on what Aspinall had learned, the UFC’s decision to hand “Chaos” the title shot has something to do with the lawsuit against Jorge Masvidal which stemmed from the pair’s physical altercation in Miami last year.

A strange decision

Speaking to The Mac Life, Aspinall said that the way he sees the entire situation, it seems like there’s a “conspiracy theory” because some people suggest that the UFC may have made an x-deal with Covington and the title shot was part of it.

“It’s a bit strange,” Aspinall said of Covington’s title shot. “I know what you’re going to say. You’re gonna say because it has something to do with the lawsuit thing. I’ve seen a lot of speculation on that online. They told Colby that if he drops the charges he can have the title shot or something like that. That seems to be a conspiracy theory.”

Indeed, it is quite baffling that Covington and Masvidal’s legal battle appears to have come to a sudden end and both fighters were cleared to fight again. Masvidal was able to return at UFC 287 against Gilbert Burns, while Covington showed up at UFC 286 to become a backup fighter for Leon Edwards vs. Kamaru Usman 3.

The UFC sees a Different thing

On the other hand, the UFC insisted that among the top contenders in the welterweight division, Covington has proven that he deserves the title shot. According to UFC president Dana White, there are a lot of reasons why “Chaos” is the one facing Edwards next and one of them was his remarkable professionalism and willingness to step up at any given time.

Among those who have voiced their disdain for Covington’s title shot was the reigning welterweight champion Edwards himself, and current No. 3 contender Belal Muhammad.
