The UFC is planning a return to Canada this summer.
Before 2020 the UFC used to hold shows all around the world. As one of the biggest fighting promotions in the world, The UFC has millions of fans all around the globe. Fans in dozens of countries tune into the fights weekly, but only a few get to attend the shows in person. With the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, that all changed.
Much like the rest of the sports world, all events needed to cease for a bit. Eventually, the UFC found a way to continue to put on fights, becoming one of the only major sports organizations holding events at the time. Their solution was to hold events in the UFC APEX center with no fans. That was the norm for a while before adding the closed events in Abu Dhabi at Fight Island for fighters outside the U.S. Now things are opening back up and the UFC has been back to traveling to most places that they were before the world closed down, all places except for Canada and some others.
Current plan is for UFC 289 to take place June 10 in Calgary … Alberta … Canada. The UFC 149 make-good would finally come to fruition.
The UFC is plotting a return to Canada for the first time since 2019
The Canadian UFC fans have been patiently waiting for an event to come back north. Now it seems that the wait is almost over. According to Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting, The UFC is planning an event to be held in Alberta, Canada in June.
The last Canadian event was back in September of 2019 in Vancouver, British Columbia. That event was headlined by a lightweight bout between Donald Cerrone and Justin Gaethje. Cerrone is now retired and set to be indicted in the Hall of Fame. The last event held in Alberta was three months earlier.
There are no fights booked yet for this card, but there are several Canadian fighters on the roster that would probably be glad to be able to fight at home for the first time in a while.
