Somewhere in lower Manhattan near the Church & Chambers Street subway entrance, a homeless man is still looking for seventy-five cents so he can buy a MetroCard and get home to Canarsie. It’s the pitch he gave me on my way out of the Subway when I arrived to the UFC open workouts at 10:30 am this morning, and the same story he was trying to reiterate to me when I left at 4:30 pm. Not sure how many people fell for his hustle, or how much longer it’s going to take him to get home at this rate, but Nate Diaz should definitely get some one-on-one time with this dude to learn how to arrive fashionably late to a press opportunity. There must be an encyclopedia’s worth of sweet excuses in a professional NYC sidewalk hustler’s repertoire. It’s a bummer all Nate had to offer us after showing up 90 minutes late was, ‘Traffic — it sucked.’
