‘Shogun’ Rua Suffers First-Round TKO in Retirement Fight Against Ihor Poteira – UFC 283 Results (Highlights)

Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua made his final walk to the Octagon on Saturday night in front of a hometown crowd at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Meeting him inside the Octagon at UFC 283 was Ukrainian challenger Ihor Potieira. Intent on spoiling Rua’s going away party, Poteira looked to get his first victory under the UFC manner against a true living legend of the sport. 

Round 1

Both fighters come out and up one another in the opening 30 seconds. Rua gets things going with back-to-back kicks to the body. Potieira responds with a left. Rua returns fire with a left of his own that connects clean. Body kick by Rua. Potieira connects with a left down the middle. Overhand right by Potieira busts open Rua’s ear. The fighters clinch up and Rua briefly trips to the ground but is able to recover quickly. Potieira pushes Rua to the fence and delivers some shoulder strikes before disengaging. With just over a minute to go, Potieira lands a stiff right hook that rocks Rua. Moving in for the kill, Potieira drops Rua with a barrage of strikes forcing Herb Dean to step in and call for the stoppage.
