  • Sean O’Malley thinks he should be getting a percentage of Aljamain Sterling’s ppv points at UFC 280
  • “Sugar” is thrilled to prove all his doubters wrong by beating Petr Yan

After a disappointing no contest bout with Pedro Munhoz at UFC 276, Sean O’Malley was fortunate to be handed with a fight against the bantamweight’s No. 1 contender Petr Yan. The pair will take on each other at UFC 280 in October as part of the stacked card co-headlined by the title fight between Aljamain Sterling and T.J. Dillashaw.

While O’Malley acknowledges that a title fight is a title fight, he claims he should be getting half of Sterling’s pay-per-view points to compensate the interest he generated for the card.

Aljo is nothing without Sugar

In a recent video on his YouTube channel, “Sugar” pointed out:

“I think this is going to be the first time Aljo gets pay-per-view points, because he’s defending his belt, which is absolutely f*****. He owes me like 50 percent of those. The UFC basically said when they announced my fight, they’ve seen the interaction and engagement of social and everything, the thing just went boom [gestures straight up]. My fight is the most hyped fight on that card. I’m not taking anything away from Charles vs. Islam, that’s going to be a sick fight, but me vs. Petr? It’s just such an interesting fight.”

“Petr’s the only one”

Lifting the lid on why he earned a shot at the 135-pound division’s No. 1 contender, O’Malley simply said both parties wanted it to happen and besides, there no on left for him in the division at the moment but Yan.

“No one else in the Top-10 — everyone was booked,” he explained. “I came out of that fight telling the UFC I want to fight and they were like, ‘Alright, Petr’s the only one.’ Petr said if you win, call me out and we’ll make it happen. Petr wanted it, I wanted it, the UFC’s not going to not make that f****** fight. That fight’s happening. I go out there and faceplant Petr in Abu Dhabi, I’m a superstar. That’s what it is.”

Excited to shut naysayers up

Unsurprisingly, O’Malley, who is currently the No. 13 bantamweight in the world, is an outright underdog against Yan in betting odds. Nevertheless, “Sugar” said that it only makes things even more exciting for him knowing he could shut all his doubters up with a victory.

“I’m excited about the opportunity,” O’Malley admitted. “I believe I will show my best skillset against someone that will bring it out of me, like Petr. I think I will rise to the occasion, because I haven’t gotten to show what I’m really f****** capable of because I haven’t fought guys that have brought it out of me… So yeah, I’m excited about this. I think a lot of people are going to be obviously excited and surprised.”

O’Malley is undeniably one of the most notable rising stars in the UFC right now and a win over Yan is likely to be his launch pad to title contention. Let’s see if “Sugar” can finally make it to the top.
