Rumor: Gilbert Melendez returns to the UFC to take on leg kick killer Edson Barboza

The UFC has big plans in store for Edson Barboza. Fresh off lighting up Anthony Pettis with a variety of legs strikes, rumors say that up next for Barboza is former Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez. If the UFC wants a firefight then mixing El Nino with the striking theatrics of Barboza should net nothing but scorched Earth.

Coming off a two fight UFC skid and a suspension, Melendez’s comeback fight with Barboza is a must-win. For Barboza, UFC matchmakers may have their sights on grooming the Brazilian for a title shot because back to back wins over Pettis and Melendez would a huge addition to his fight resume.

UFC on Fox 20 in Chicago takes place on July 23rd with the news first reported by sportv.globo.com (Portuguese to English translation via Google)

“After defeating Anthony Pettis by unanimous decision at UFC 196 , the Brazilian – lightweight Edson Barboza already has his next fight lined . The Ultimate plans to put the Nova Friburgo face to face with the American Gilbert Melendez , former Strikeforce champion and twice challenging number 1 category at UFC Chicago , held July 23 , according to the Combate.com found . The duel still depends on details of settlement to be confirmed .”
