Mortal Kombat is being reborn.

‘A New Era Has Begun’

That’s right, the long-running and highly successful video game franchise is set to release a new game later this year. However, the working title won’t be ‘Mortal Kombat 12’. Instead, the developers have decided to dub it ‘Mortal Kombat 1’ in a historic reboot.

The story will follow the events of ‘Mortal Kombat 11’ where the in-game universe enters a ‘New Era’ reality after Liu Kang reached godhood.

“A new era has begun,” the trailer description reads. “It’s In Our Blood. Discover a reborn Mortal Kombat Universe created by Fire God Liu Kang. Mortal Kombat 1 ushers in a new era of the iconic franchise with a new fighting system, game modes, and Fatalities!”

As for the playable character roster, many fan-favorites were featured in the trailer including:Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, and Johnny Cage. The whole roster has still yet to be announced but these are the characters who have been confirmed to be in the latest game.

The twelfth installment of the franchise will also introduce Kameo Fighters, which can let you bring in a partner-character from a unique roster as a back-up to your in-game fights.

Mortal Kombat 1 is set to hit the stores on September 19th and will be available to purchase and play on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and also on the Nintendo Switch.

The normal version will be up for sale at $70 but if you’re willing to dish out more damage to your bank account, you can get the Premium Edition for $110 or the Kollector’s Edition for $250. Pre-orders go out on May 19th at 10:00am PST, where if you pre-buy you will receive Shang Tsung as a playable character.
