  • “The Count” speculated on Islam Makhachev’s next opponent, naming three best options

Michael Bisping was cage-side when he shared his thoughts on the epic pound-for-pound title fight showdown between Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284. While “The Great” is already likely to be slated for a unification bout with now interim featherweight champion Yair Rodriguez, “The Count” said Makhachev will have to prepare for three next possible opponents.

Dustin, Conor, or Chandler

Looking at the current UFC rankings, No. 4 lightweight contender Beneil Dariush seems to be making sense. But according to Bisping, it would be a no-brainer for the UFC to pick between the favorite at the moment, Dustin Poirier, and the winner between TUF Season 31 coaches Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler.

“The win streak [of Volkanovski] ended. I mean but what, what a fight, what a shot what a guy you know I mean he really push it to the limit he gave Islam by far the toughest test of his career that’s without question. Makhachev, though, I mean this guy… the striking was phenomenal. Let’s be honest, laser accurate striking, of course the wrestling was always there, we know that he was relentless with it. It wasn’t easy to take Volkanovski down, the amount of energy that both men used was just flipping ridiculous,” Bisping said.

“Who’s gonna fight next? it’s gonna be Dustin Poirier. It’s gonna be Dustin Poirier but at the end of The Ultimate Fighter… if Conor McGregor can defeat his opponent Michael Chandler. If he can, he’ll be fighting for the belt. Chandler may fight for the belt as well, so lightweight division – always incredible to watch, always incredible,” he added.

Volk has another tough assignment

Bisping pointed out that even though Makhachev’s next fight will be among the biggest fights UFC fans will be waiting for, Volkanovski vs. Rodriguez is also an interesting matchup.

“He’s still the featherweight champion of the goddamn world but of course we have an interim champ as well… After going through that fight after being you know that challenge that fight that war being pushes the limit and ultimately losing in his home country, now he has to take on somebody like Yair Rodriguez. That performance against Josh Emmett was just sensational,” Bisping raved.

“It’s the way that he makes things up that ultimately resulted in him being successful tonight I mean it’s called mixed martial arts you’ve got to mix it up. Yair Rodriguez is a master of the eight limbs, the punches, kicks, knees, elbows, all the rest of it, so you know that’s why you got the job done. You’re mixing things up. He’s unpredictable, he’s catching people,” he added.

Despite the defeat, Volkanovski is still hoping to get a rematch with Makhachev. On the other hand, Makhachev thinks that his win over Volk already made him the “best fighter in the world” bar none.
