UFC Hall of Famer Michael Bisping can’t contain his excitement for the planned welterweight title fight between Leon Edwards and Colby Covington.
UFC CEO Dana White recently announced that Edwards will be putting his 170-pound gold on the line against Covington at UFC 296 on December 16. The title fight will headline the UFC’s final pay-per-view event of 2023. There were quite a few twists and turns getting to this bout, with Edwards initially wanting the October 21 date, and Covington claiming Jon Jones kicked him off the UFC 295 card set for November 11, but it’s finally official.
Michael Bisping Gives Leon Edwards A Heads Up
Taking to his YouTube channel, Michael Bisping said that Edwards must be aware that Covington is a different fighter from Kamaru Usman.
“Colby Covington is a hype machine, he really is,” Bisping said. “He’s a great fighter, and it’s a tough fight against Leon Edwards at UFC 296. A fight that given the form that Leon Edwards is on right now, the way that he defended against Kamaru, I mean, he looked phenomenal in that. The takedown defense was on point, the striking was beautiful, the knees and the elbows in the clinch. It’s a very, very dangerous fight, but on the flipside, Colby Covington is very different from Kamaru Usman. It’s gonna be a nonstop attack, high-paced, action fight right from start to finish.”
Edwards’ last two fights have come against Usman. “Rocky” scored a thrilling come from behind head kick KO win over Usman back in August 2022. In their most recent encounter back in May, Edwards scored a majority decision victory.
At the end of the day, Bisping is expecting Edwards vs. Covington to deliver fireworks to cap off another wild year for the UFC.
“The fight will be sensational,” Bisping said.
