After coming up short in her first shot at bantamweight gold, Mayra Bueno Silva looked to bounce back at UFC 303 against NOLA native Macy Chiasson.
Bueno Silva delivered a spectacular performance in her scrap against former UFC champ Holly Holm last July. Unfortunately, ‘Sheetara’ seemingly took a step backward when she stepped inside the Octagon against Raquel Pennington for the vacant 135-pound crown at UFC 297. Bueno Silva was determined to correct those mistakes as she met the No. 7 ranked Chiasson inside T-Mobile Arena on Saturday night.
Round 1
Silva comes out looking to close the distance early and lands a nice elbow during a brief clinch in the center of the Octagon. Chiasson continues to dance around the outside of the cage, using her length to keep Silva at a distance. Silva lands a leg kick followed by a front kick and then an attack up top before clinching up against the fence. Silva lands a nice elbow. Chiasson reverses position and attempts to land an elbow of her own before separating.
Silva throws a wheel kick that glances off Chiasson’s face. Chiasson mixes up her attack, but Silva lands a stiff left hand and clinches up once again. Chiasson offers up a combination, but it’s clear that Silva has a significant power advantage. Chiasson turns it up with just over a minute to go, but Silva comes right back and punishes her with a combination of her own.
Silva lands a cracking right and once again presses Chiasson up against the fence and looks to take things to the ground, but Chiasson defends and takes control of the clinch as the round comes to an end.
Round 2
Silva picks up right where she left off, landing a nice head kick, but Chiasson responds with a takedown near the center of the Octagon. Chiasson lands a slicing elbow that has Silva busted open and bleeding profusely over her right eyebrow. Silva snatches Chiasson’s arm and digs in for an armbar, but ultimately lets the hold go after realizing she doesn’t have it. Chiasson gets back to her feet and punishes Silva’s leg with some stiff kicks. Chiasson lets Silva back to her feet, but referee Chris Tognoni uses it as an opportunity to call a time-out and check on Silva’s cut.
Due to the cut being significantly deep, the fight is waved off via the advice of the cageside physician.
