Heavyweight standout Jailton Almeida returned to the Octagon at UFC 299 determined to break into the division’s top five in a high-stakes showdown with the heavy-hitting Curtis ‘Razor’ Blaydes.

Almeida headed to the Kaseya Center in Miami with an unblemished record under the UFC banner, dispatching his first six opponents, including an absolutely dominant performance against Derrick Lewis in November. Surging toward his first UFC title opportunity, ‘Malhadinho’ was tasked with taking out one of the division’s most dangerous ground and pounders.

Round 1

As expected, Almeida gets things started in the opening seconds with a quick takedown attempt. Blaydes does a good job of defending but ultimately ends up on the mat. Blaydes works his way back up but is quickly taken back down. Blaydes fights his way up again, but Almeida kicks his leg out from under him, bringing him back down. With more than three minutes to go, Almeida has already landed a career-best seven takedowns but has done absolutely nothing with them.

That process continues for the remainder of the round, eliciting a chorus of boos from the live crowd.

Round 2

Almeida comes out swinging in the second, landing a nice overhand right before inevitably shooting. Blaydes successfully sprawls, catching Almeida with an uppercut on the way in. Blaydes unleashes a flurry of brutal hammer fists. Almeida relinquishes the hold and turtles up, forcing the referee to step in and call for the stoppage.

Official Result: Curtis Blaydes def. Jailton Almeida via TKO (ground and pound) at 0:36 of Round 2.
