UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev is aware that Justin Gaethje is eyeing his 155-pound gold, and he’s got a message for “The Highlight.”

Makhachev last competed back in October, and he isn’t expected to return until after March 2024. He was last seen inside the Octagon scoring a first-round head kick finish over UFC featherweight champion Alex Volkanovski in their rematch. Much speculation has been made on Makhachev’s next title defense and whether it’ll be a rematch with Charles Oliveira or a showdown with Gaethje.

It’s clear that the symbolic BMF champion believes his name should be called.

Islam Makhachev Issues Warning to Justin Gaethje

Justin Gaethje hopped on his X account to call for a championship opportunity against Islam Makhachev. The 155-pound titleholder was quick to respond.

“I can do more than kicking, be careful,” Makhachev responded.

In the past, Gaethje has said he’d be willing to wait if he isn’t next in line at lightweight. Back in October, Gaethje had the following to say during an interview with ESPN.

“Who do I fight?” Gaethje said. “There’s no one. I did what I had to do. … I don’t know what else I need to do.

“If they want to put Oliveira in there, then I fight him in September [or next October],” Gaethje said. … “I have no issues waiting. Again, as I get older I get to understand from now until the time I’m gonna fight him I’m gonna be building strength, I’m gonna be working on my cardio, I’m gonna be refining my skills. So, I’ll take as much time as they give me and I’ll be that much more ready.”

The UFC hasn’t announced who Makhachev’s next challenger will be. Recently, Charles Oliveira took to social media to hint at some fight news being revealed soon. It’ll be interesting to see what shakes out, and Middle Easy will keep you posted.
