Henry Cejudo Made A Case Why Demetrious Johnson Shouldn’t Get A Rematch

Henry Cejudo On Johnson’s Trilogy: ‘We Need New Storyline In Our Weight Class’

Henry Cejudo shocked the world earlier this month in the co-main event of UFC 227 after defeating the most dominant champion in UFC history Demetrious Johnson via narrowly edged split decision to claim the flyweight title.

That fight was a rematch of UFC 197 back in April 2016 where Johnson defeated Cejudo via first-round TKO.

Following a historic win, Cejudo calls out the bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw. At a UFC 227 Post-fight press conference former Olympic gold medalist Cejudo said his goal to become a ‘triple champion.’

But ‘Mighty Mouse’ impressive record implies that he deserves a rematch as he already beat ‘The Messenger’ in their first meeting, but Cejudo has some other plans. (Via MMAMania)

“I would agree when it comes to the statistics side of it,” Cejudo recently said on the Ariel Helwani MMA Show when discussing Johnson’s bid for a trilogy bout. “But at the same time, I know what the UFC’s trying to create, man. I had to wait two and a half years to face Demetrious Johnson.

“I had to wait, too. And it’s also good, too, for our weight class to start new storylines that have noting to do with Demetrious Johnson. We need new storylines in our weight class.”

Demetrious Johnson who suffered his first loss in nearly seven years in a rematch by the hands of Cejudo also he injured his foot and tore the LCL during the fight. It’s unknown when Johnson will return to action. If former champion wants another crack at a strap he holds for years, UFC shouldn’t have a problem.

But according to Cejudo, it would be great if he fights other then ‘Mighty Mouse’ for the sake of division.

“Think about it…let’s just say Demetrious Johnson beats me for the trilogy,” Cejudo said. “Again, that goes back to not building a storyline. I think Demetrious Johnson may agree with me. Just for the sake of our weight class, I think it would be good. I think it would be good to see somebody else, for now, except for Demetrious Johnson.”

If he doesn’t want to fight Johnson then who? Top contender Sergio Pettis and Jussier Formiga are slated to face each other at UFC 229. Cejudo may face the winner by the end of this year.

Johnson surely deserves a rematch, but under his title reign, the division didn’t grow much.

What do you think who deserves a title shot next?
