Georges St-Pierre has given a straight-forward answer on whether or not fans can expect him to return to pro MMA competition.
St-Pierre last fought back in November 2017. He defeated Michael Bisping to capture the UFC middleweight gold, further cementing his legacy by winning gold in a second weight class under the UFC banner. “Rush” would not stick around after the one-fight comeback from his hiatus and he would eventually announce his retirement from pro MMA competition.
Over the years, fight fans have been teased with a potential Khabib Nurmagomedov fight, but a bout between the two retired legends isn’t likely to ever come to fruition outside of a UFC video game. While the ship may have sailed on that matchup, would GSP consider an MMA comeback against someone else?
GSP’s Current Injury Status
Georges St-Pierre spoke to reporters during a UFC Fight Pass International media scrum. GSP injured his shoulder ahead of a planned grappling match with his old foe Nick Diaz. St-Pierre revealed that he’s waiting to see if he will need surgery.
“I’m extremely competitive and sometimes I forget that I’m 42 and I don’t give myself enough rest and that’s why I think I partially tore my labrum, my subscap, and my rotator cuff but my shoulder is getting better and yeah, we’ll see,” St-Pierre said. “Things is constantly moving. I know Nick is probably looking for a comeback in MMA, too. The universe is constantly moving, and I’m aware of that. I cannot put everything on pause, someone cannot put everything on pause and waiting. I have to do another test because there is a big deficit between the strength of my two shoulders where I got hurt, and now I’m gonna make another test to see if that deficit gap has [shrunk], and if it has [shrunk] that means I probably will avoid surgery.”
Georges St-Pierre Rules Out MMA Return
Recently, UFC CEO Dana White appeared on the “Full Send Podcast,” and he teased a massive super fight, but he didn’t go into details other than Conor McGregor won’t be a part of this fight. St-Pierre insisted he has nothing to do with the fight and will not be returning to pro MMA competition.
“Absolutely not,” St-Pierre. “I promise you, I always told my son that I would not fight in a cage after the age of 40. I don’t say I will never compete in any combat sport, but a fight in a cage professionally in a serious thing, for my legacy I will not do it.”
St-Pierre went on to say he cares about his health more than his legacy. He said a lot of all-time MMA greats tarnish their legacies and health by fighting for too long.
