Demetrious Johnson Tore LCL, Broke Right Foot In UFC 227 Title Loss

Demetrious Johnson’s long-standing reign as UFC flyweight champion ended last night (August 4, 2018) from staple center Los Angeles when he lost to Henry Cejudo via split decision. Johnson was a 5-1 favorite and had been the only flyweight champion in promotion’s history for nearly six years.

‘Might Mouse’ 125-pound champion reign began in 2012 that includes a UFC record 11 straight consecutive title defenses. Johnson suffered first loss in nearly seven years. Despite being lost his title, Johnson seemed in a good spirit and recognized that losing happens to all great champions.

Johnson also reminded us, that it’s not the first time he has tasted the defeat, as in 2011 he lost to Dominick Cruz that was his last fight at bantamweight division.

“I’m fine,” said Johnson when asked how he’s coping with his first loss in seven years. “Losing happens. Every great champion loses. I’ve lost before when I fought Dom [Dominick Cruz]. I lose in the gym. So I’m fine.

“I’m more upset about the injuries, but other than that I’m okay.”

Johnson on the injuries, all the damage he sustained was on the right leg during his fight with Cejudo.

“I think I probably tore my right LCL and then my right foot might be broken,” explained the former champ. “I think the right LCL probably happened in the second or third round. I remember we were scrambling and I maybe shot and then he kind of pushed me over and I rolled over on my right knee and I was like ‘there goes the right LCL.’

“And the foot, that’s just from kicking and kicking and kicking and kicking.”

It’s understandable if Johnson did suffer these nagging injuries in his title fight with Cejudo it explains everything why “Mighty Mouse” looked less of aggressive in the last rounds. That’s when Cejudo took advantage and turn the game into his control.

We guess Johnson undoubtedly deserves an immediate rematch with Henry Cejudo as soon ‘Mighty Mouse’ recover from his injuries as in their first fight; Johnson defeated Cejudo via first round knock out at UFC 197 back in April of 2016.
