Demetrious Johnson Explains Why He’s So Confident He’d Beat Aljamain Sterling In A Potential Fight

Johnson thinks Sterling's clinch game is his weakness.

Demetrious Johnson has a lot of confidence he would be able to beat Aljamain Sterling.

Sterling is the current UFC bantamweight champion and recently revealed during a Q&A in his gym that he thinks Johnson is ‘too little’ for him and believes Father Time passed him by. However, Johnson thinks he would have a lot of success against Sterling and even asked ONE Championship to try and make the fight happen.

Although it’s highly unlikely that Demetrious Johnson and Aljamain Sterling will ever fight, ‘Mighty Mouse’ believes there is one area he would be able to dominate Sterling which would lead to the win.

“I feel his weakness is he has no clinch game,” Johnson said on The MMA Hour. “Like, I would eat his ass up for breakfast in the clinch game. I feel like rhythm wise, I move way better than he does in the feet. [In] grappling, he is longer, so I would never let him get my f****** back, because he’ll lock them f*****g ‘Funk Master’ legs in a body triangle like he did at Peter Yan, and they’ll have to survive him doing that.

“The one thing he does that helps to my advantage is that he crosses a distance for me, right? He, he does this [jabs the air], and a funky-ass kick, and I’m like, ‘Perfect. Come here, I wanna show you a thing called Muay Thai clinch.’ I just feel like I’ll eat him alive in a clinch,” Johnson added.

Johnson offers to spar Sterling

Although both Demetrious Johnson and Aljamain Sterling have expressed interest in a fight, it doesn’t seem it will ever happen.

However, Johnson says with the two in different promotions, he is more than open to the two sparring in the gym and grapple each other but don’t have to go all out.

“Let’s play spar,” he said. “Come spar, and I would love to grapple you. I love that. Just move and see how you just do your thing.”

Whether or not Sterling will accept Johnson’s sparring offer is to be seen.
