  • DC thinks a fight with “Notorious” is good for Islam’s career and legacy

Daniel Cormier weighed in on what’s next for Islam Makhachev and came up with the idea that the lightweight champ should take on Conor McGregor. For DC, people may not take it seriously but there’s more to it than meets the eye.

It’s the perfect storyline

Speaking to DC & RC, Cormier further backed his bold idea. According to DC, people just don’t realize how perfect the storyline would be for a Makhachev vs. McGregor super fight. Also, Cormier pointed out that a fight with “Notorious,” especially a win over McGregor, would be good for Islam’s stature.

“I think Islam should fight Conor. I think Islam should fight Conor McGregor next,” Cormier suggested. “Because… You have to listen… It’s built in. It’s the biggest money fight the UFC could make. And, why not? You have Islam Makhachev, who looks to be a guy that’s gonna be a dominant champion. In order to have that dominant champion go to the next level of superstardom, you need a foil, you need a guy that can elevate him. The guy that can elevate him to that level is Conor McGregor.”

“Because look at what Conor McGregor did, or look at what beating Conor McGregor did for Dustin Poirier. Look at what it did for Khabib Nurmagomedov. And we’re not even talking about all the other levels at which this just makes sense,” Cormier continued. “You have Islam fighting Conor after the issues Conor has had with Khabib and everything else. You have Islam fighting Conor, the biggest star in mixed martial arts coming back to the UFC… It makes sense!”

Islam has got other things in mind

While Cormier’s pitch seems to have a point, Makhachev appears to be keen on doing other things at the moment. As it stands, Makhachev is plotting a move to welterweight to chase double champ status. On the other hand, he is also open to facing Charles Oliveira again or taking on Justin Gaethje.
