Former two-division UFC champion Daniel Cormier has put out two names most likely to face Conor McGregor next.
Conor McGregor has been out of action since his last outing against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. The Irish superstar suffered a horrific leg break injury that has had him sidelined for over a year. While McGregor has expressed interest in getting a shot at the welterweight king Kamaru Usman, he may not get it immediately in his comeback.
Daniel Cormier names two opponents for Conor McGregor
In an appearance for ESPN MMA, Daniel Cormier named two potential opponents for ‘The Notorious’.
“I’ve got two names. I know who he should fight, and I know who he probably will fight”
“Who he should fight is Nate Diaz. They should complete this trilogy. It’s a massive fight. Both guys are not necessarily in the title picture right now. It’s a fun fight. We’ve seen it twice and both of them have delivered. I think it’s evenly matched, so I think he should fight Nate Diaz.”
Cormier believes McGregor would prefer Chandler
Following Michael Chandler’s vicious knockout win over Tony Ferguson, ‘Iron’ Mike doubled down on his performance with an electrifying promo to call out ‘The Mystic Mac’.
Cormier is of the opinion that McGregor would prefer Chandler due to the buzz he has been able to create.
“Who I believe he will fight is Michael Chandler because Michael Chandler has taken the UFC by storm. This guy only had four fights (in the UFC so far). He has now had the greatest front-kick knockout of all time, he has knocked out Dan Hooker, fought for the championship, fought in a Fight of the Year fight against Justin Gaethje”
“So his resume is strong, his profile is strong and every single time he wins a fight, he jumps on that microphone and he makes a statement. And in his last fight, he made a statement that he’s ready to fight Conor McGregor.”
Chandler’s willingness to go up to 170 and meet McGregor on his terms will help in making the big money fight happen.
“I think this fight works. I think Chandler is going to engage him on the terms under which McGregor wants to fight and Chandler is willing to go and fight him at 170. So I think he should fight Nate Diaz, I think that he will fight Michael Chandler.”
McGregor has been swift in recovery and recently started working on the pads again. As the biggest draw in the sport, he has been called out by multiple opponents and is yet to solidify his choice.
