  • Dana White said UFC 284 could possibly break the promotion’s current all-time record in PPV buys
  • The UFC boss said the numbers have been showing overwhelming results as early as now

UFC president Dana White has successfully organized and promoted numerous high-grossing pay-per-view events. He expresses great optimism that UFC 284 will set new records and surpass all expectations. In fact, the UFC boss predicted that the massive title fight between Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski will surpass the promotion’s current all-time record in PPV buys.

“It’s a monster fight”

Speaking in his post-UFC Vegas 68 press conference, White pointed out that the fact that Makhachev and Volkanovski, the No. 1 and No. 2 pound-for-pound fighters in the UFC, are taking on each other in a battle for supremacy already speaks volumes about how massive of an event UFC 284 is.

According to White, as early as now, the trajectory of UFC 284 in terms of numbers is already showing that it could probably break the long-standing UFC PPV buys all-time record set by UFC 229: Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor, which had 2.4 million PPV sold.

“I don’t it’s ever happened – the number one and number two pound-for-pound [fighting each other]… “I mean it’s a monster fight and you know, just the gate alone out of there is going to be an MSG-type gate. And the pre-buys for pay-per-view… is beating all the fights of its type and it is probably going to break the record for pay-per-view in Australia and New Zealand, the UFC all [time] record, which was Conor and somebody, but it’s looking like it’s going to break that record. It’s a monster fight,” White declared.

More hype please

Dana White’s remarkable statements were undoubtedly an astute move to generate buzz for the highly-anticipated Makhachev vs. Volkanovski title match. It was only fitting as Makhachev previously voiced his dissatisfaction with the way White and the UFC has been promoting UFC 284.

Right around the same time, former UFC champ-champ Henry Cejudo also shared the same sentiment, questioning why the promotion has done less in hyping the “super fight” between Makhachev and Volkanovski.

Makhachev currently holds the UFC lightweight title and is looking to prove that he is the real pound-for-pound king. Volkanovski, meanwhile, is the reigning featherweight king and is aiming to make history by becoming an undefeated UFC double-champion.
