Coach Firas Zahabi: ‘I Want Georges St-Pierre To Fight Floyd Mayweather’

Former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre hasn’t fought since dropping the middleweight belt due to the ulcerative colitis that he has been dealing with during his training for the Michael Bisping fight last November at UFC 217.

St-Pierre’s coach, Firas Zahabi wants his pupil star to follow Conor Mcgregor’s footstep and fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a boxing match, during his recent appearance on the “JRE MMA Show” podcast. (Via MMAJunkie)

“I want Georges to fight Mayweather. I keep bothering Georges, ‘You fight Mayweather. You fight him.’ He’s like, ‘It’s crazy.’ I know it’s crazy. They’ll fight at a catchweight. Do you think Mayweather is worried that he’s going to be concussed? He’s fought all the top punchers in the world. He’s just going to have to worry about Georges’ volume and reach, but he can handle himself, and Georges can handle himself. But the whole world is going to tune into that one.”

St-Pierre is looking a return fight only if it adds a flavor to his legacy. Last month news broke that Dana White keen to book GSP vs. Nate Diaz for later this year. Afterward, St-Pierre turned down the potential fight with star Nate Diaz and indicated other challenges were his preference for a comeback. GSP has a desire of adding another piece of UFC gold to his resume.

Coach Zahabi has a point. Mayweather vs. Mcgregor’s boxing match drew a reported 4.3 million pay-per-view (PPV) buys in North America and made more than $600 million in revenue.

There is one drawback to this fight, a size difference between the two stars, St-Pierre is a larger fighter than Mayweather Jr.

“I’m like, ‘Georges do it,’ But Georges doesn’t want to fight a smaller guy, doesn’t want to call out a smaller guy,” Zahabi said. “So it’s going to have to come from Mayweather. It’s going to have to come from him.”

After Mcgregor’s fight, Mayweather announced the retirement from boxing. Earlier this year he teased the idea of making a crossover to MMA, nothing seems to materialize as of now.

Do you think this crossover fight will ever happen?
