Chael Sonnen Can’t Understand Why Dustin Poirier Is The Underdog At UFC 299 Against Benoit Saint-Denis

Sonnen thinks Poirier shouldn't be the underdog against Saint-Denis.

Chael Sonnen can’t wrap his head around why Dustin Poirier is the betting underdog against Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299.

Poirier is set to return in a five-round co-main event fight on the pay-per-view against Saint-Denis in a very intriguing matchup. ‘The Diamond’ is coming off a KO loss to Justin Gaethje back in July for the BMF title. It was an upset loss, and now, as Poirier is fighting down in the rankings, he’s the underdog and Chael Sonnen doesn’t get.

“Don’t forget, Poirier’s an underdog, which is a colossal mistake. There is no justification for whoever set that line. They had better sit there crossing their fingers that they get that one right because there is nothing by the numbers they can point to, to justify telling DraftKings, my partner, that they should put more money opposite Poirier than for him. There is nothing by the numbers, just so you understand this,” Sonnen said on his YouTube channel.

“This is 100 percent predicated on the perception that one just got his hand raised at Madison Square Garden and one just got upset in Salt Lake City. And nobody has ever moved a line based on venue placement, that’s what happened here. Madison Square Garden seemed more grandiose than Salt Lake City. That is what happened, but either way, Dustin is the underdog,” Sonnen continued.

Dustin Poirier is currently a +114 underdog and at those odds, the oddsmakers are implying he has a 46.7% chance of winning the fight.

Dustin Poirier looking to remain a contender

Not only is Dustin Poirier the underdog at UFC 299, but this fight is crucial for his standing in the lightweight division.

Poirier is coming off the KO loss to Justin Gaethje for the BMF belt back in July, and if he’s going to remain a contender in the division, he needs to beat Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299 in Miami.

If Poirier loses to Saint-Denis, his time as a title contender will be over, and his future in the sport will be unclear.
