Chael Sonnen thinks Conor McGregor’s only chance of beating Michael Chandler is if he could take him out in the first round.

Conor needs to get it done in one

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Sonnen shared his honest take on McGregor’s much-awaited comeback fight against Chandler. The way “The Bad Guy” sees it, “Notorious” still got the power in his hands and he better knock “Iron” out in the first as it’s the only way he’s winning in a five-round match.

“Conor has one way to beat Michael Chandler, of which is not gonna matter in the first round. Turns out Conor’s really good at knocking people out in the first round, but that is his only chance. If this sees the second round… think of DraftKings or something, you got totally different odds. If this sees the third round, we don’t even have a conversation, for sure Chandler wins. Chandler could lose all ten minutes to get to the third round, but if the third round begins, Chandler wins the fight,” Sonnen assessed.

A three-round fight could change it

Further discussing the subject, Sonnen suggested that things could take a different turn if the UFC decides to make McGregor vs. Chandler a three-round fight instead of five.

“It’s not too late because a bout agreement isn’t signed to make Conor and Chandler three rounds,” Sonnen explained. “Now, you have a different conversation, you have a completely different line, you have a completely different book, you have a completely different analysis. Now Conor can win, now he can win a decision. He can bank eight minutes and lose seven and win a decision.”

McGregor vs. Chandler is still in progress. As it stands, the fight is believed to be at middleweight and is targeted to take place on June 29th.

Both fighters are coming in off a defeat from Dustin Poirier. However, Chandler is viewed to have a slight advantage over “Notorious,” who hasn’t fought since 2021.
