Alexander Volkanovski is making sure he’s packing in those extra pounds ahead of his UFC 284 title fight with lightweight champion Islam Makhachev. The reigning pound-for-pound king vows to be coming in way stronger than he ever was.
A stronger Volk
Unlike with other fighters, Volkanovski’s preparation for UFC 284 isn’t an uphill battle. If anything, it has been a feast because he’s allowed to eat pretty much anything his mouth desires.
But on the other hand, “The Great” remains focused on getting stronger. In fact, Volkanovski confirmation he has now bulked up some more muscles to make himself ready for an all-out war with a heavier opponent in Makhachev.
“I’ll still enjoy myself because I’m allowed to eat whatever I want. I’m bulking,” Volkanovski said on his YouTube channel.
“Islam’s strong. Islam’s going to be ready. But I guarantee you, mark my words — I’m going to be ready. I’m going to be more than ready. I’m going to be fit. I’m going to be stronger than ever. I’m already filling up. I’m already holding more muscle than I originally did in my last few fights. I’m already stronger, significantly stronger.”
Staring the new year with a bang
The year 2022 has been an incredible year for Volkanovski. He successfully defended his featherweight title twice against two of the greatest fighters in his division – Chan Sung Jung and most recently, Max Holloway. In 2023, “The Great” is expecting to start the year by having his name written in history books with a big win over Makhachev.
“I’m telling you 2023 is gonna be the biggest year of my whole career, my legacy,” Volaknovski explained. “This is the defining year. 2023, it starts off with taking out Islam. Big opportunity to not only be great but to be one of the greatest. So, that’s what I’m coming for.”
Volkanovski also see himself earning a super-fight with ultra-popular UFC superstar Conor McGregor if he manages to beat Makhachev. On the other hand, Makhachev has also began training for his first title defense.
UFC 284 will see either Volkanovski or Makhachev joining the vaunted list of two-division champions in the history of the promotion. The fight will take place on Feb. 11 at the Rac Arena in Perth, Western Australia, Australia.
