I have a confession to make, The Sopranos really messed my TV watching ability. It was the first drama that I watched and it was almost the last. The problem about Sopranos was that it was almost too good that any other drama I watched after just paled in comparison. See, I wanted to like other shows but The Sopranos warped my perception of what should be expected from TV.
This feeling stayed with me for quite some time — that is until I started watching Breaking Bad. I still remember the day I watched the first episode…followed by about 11 more. Therein lies the problem with Breaking Bad, much like The Sopranos it’s almost too good. I watched 4 seasons in a mere two weeks. It wasn’t healthy, but what was more unhealthy was the wait between episodes when I was caught up with the current season. The wait was painful, it brought me back to my days of watching The Sopranos. A masochist joy of sorts, when Sunday finally rolled around, it wasn’t a moment of happiness watching my favorite drama, it was more an ending to the pain. That’s how good Breaking Bad is, it’s so good that I don’t even enjoy — it’s so good that it gives me physical and mental anguish. That is a sign of a truly great TV show.
