Matt Serra has much faith in Aljamain Sterling.
So much so, the former UFC Welterweight Champion and coach is favoring ‘Funkmaster’ to win another UFC title, that being against featherweight kingpin Alexander Volkanovski.
It is no secret that Sterling wants to move up a weight class after his next fight against Sean O’Malley because 1: he wants to let teammate Merab Dvalishvili win the title and 2: no more massive weight cuts.
‘He’s Finishing’ Volkanovski
Serra is super confident in Sterling’s chances against Volkanovski, should the pair meet inside the Octagon someday.
“I believe Aljo said that in a perfect world he’ll defend it like once or twice, and then he’ll go up, give Merab [Dvalishvili] his time. I’ll tell you right now, I do believe this,” Serra said on The Schaub Show. “I’m not sh*tting on Volkanovski, he’s one short, bald, stocky hero. I like that guy.
“My thing is I feel if Aljo had that back, and it’s just like the way your body’s shaped, the bigger arms, the bigger guy, a guy with no neck, Aljo with his arms, they’re wiry, I believe. If he doesn’t get the neck, he’ll break the jaw. I believe he gets that back, he’s finishing. How about that?”
‘A Winnable Fight’
Being in Sterling’s corner for many years, Serra truly believes his guy can get it done against ‘The Great’.
“A smaller wiry guy on your back, they’re worse than the big meatheads. That’s a winnable fight [for Sterling].”
It is uncertain whether the two will tango though as Alexander Volkanovski defends his title against Yair Rodriguez at UFC 290 and Sterling takes on Sean O’Malley at UFC 292.
Should we hear the words ‘And Still’ twice, perhaps this could be the next fight to make.
