The timeframe and disappearance of former flyweight Champion, Nicco Montano, has been an odd one after her having to back out the fight for not making weight against now current Champion of 125, Valentina "Bullet" Shevchenko. https://www.instagram.com/p/BxKyJ6RFZJ_/ With that Montaño got her belt taken away and alas Shevchecko is crowned the queen of the division after winning against her long-time rival, Joanna Jedrzejczyk. After the switch ensued it seemed like Montaño just needed more and more time off. But, now she had been found on some Carmen Sandiego vibes. Meanwhile, that isn't the only fighter who is popping up for the BBQ after being out for awhile, Julianna "The Venezuelan Vixen" Peña. Why do I bring up this bantamweight? Mostly because she will be the one facing Montaño after the decision was made to move up a weight class. Peña wasn't the first choice for Montaño, it was actually Sara McMann however, the former Olympian had to pull out of the fight and taking her place is the brawler the division missed the most, Julianna Pena. During the time of living the new mommy life, Peña also landed a job as a female commentator for Combate Amèricanas. https://www.instagram.com/p/Byb3_OID8E-/ The last time UFC was in Sacramento was in 2017 and they are making another comeback July 13th at the Golden 1 Center. We haven't seen Montaño fight since she won against Roxanne Modafferi two years ago during the TUF 26 finale. https://www.instagram.com/p/BxX-Io_F7_g/ Having that kind of gap in the fight game could lead to 'ring rust'. However, with not that many workout videos or training photos it is hard to tell where Montaño is at the moment in reference of the fight game. Let's hope she is sharpening those fight skills, because the heart of Julianna Pena inside the cage I'm sure will explode with violence as soon as you hear the cage door closed. https://www.instagram.com/p/BvGH5nsjhFZ/ Hopefully Montaño knows something we don't. There is less than a month away for this fight and while Montaño fights with heart too it is clear she doesn't give up in fights and really gives her all. The Arizona native moving up a weight class would be interesting in a way to find if the rawness also follows. Nicco Montano seems like the perfect size for a flyweight, but has issues making weight so this could be a good thing. Both women have to find their way on the rankings and this is a good start. The last time "The Venezuelan Vixen" was in the UFC octagon was her loss against Shevchenko where she lost in the round two with an armbar in Denver on Jan. 28th, 2017. As the time ticks ahead of the fight both bantamweights have a story to tell. It all comes down to who will want it more.
