The Order 1886 Looks to Take the Grind Out of Shooters

The upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive The Order: 1886 is probably one of the most promising exclusives that a next-generation (or is it now current generation?) consoles have to offer. Not only does it look beautiful, but there is a promise of streamlining gameplay to make the game more fun, which seems like a godsend right about now. I feel like graphics keep getting better and better but gameplay has been so stagnant for years with shooting being the only thing players are presented with in games, which can be mildly frustrating at times.

The Order: 1886 is still going to be a shooter of the third person variety, but the developers are looking to make the experience a bit more unique than just grinding out wave-after-wave of enemies like you’ll see in most games. It is indeed a tired gameplay mechanic and helps to destroy any sense of immersion that a player might have. Look, I get it, you want it to still be a game that is challenging, but when did challenging gameplay just equate to sending out more enemies to shoot at? Ready at Dawn really seem to just get it.

“Shooters have a tendency to be very light or canned on melee. We wanted to find new ways of introducing it that would keep you feeling you were in a shooter that’s evolved into something else, rather than been segmented. It started with us trying to figure out how we balance the two, shooter and melee, but then it evolved into us making this shooter with different melee systems.

“Beyond that, we also tried to make the moment-to-moment gameplay different. We didn’t want it to be a grind for 40-45 minutes because you’re in shooting mode. Everything in the game happens in little bursts, and that really makes you not dwell too much on one thing that might otherwise bore you.”

I really hope that they are able to deliver on this, because damn, this sounds great.

Speaking of "gameplay", where is it?

Well, that trailer was kind of a 'reveal' trailer at E3. I'd expect something more solid very soon, at least when it comes to videos showing gameplay.

Looks cool but since it's not on Xbox one and I'm getting an Xbox one, I'll never really know how cool it is. Is it weird that out of my 40-50 closest friends not a single one had a PS3? I honest to god logged ZERO seconds on a PS3. That's fucked up lol

It is kind of weird that none had a PS3, honestly.

I have both Xbox 360 and PS3 and I'll end up with both PS4 and Xbox One because each system ends up getting cool exclusives.

Everybody had an Xbox. I've never played one. Maybe some day down the road I'll have both but no PS4 anytime soon. Damn CC you busted me :(
