- Wyatt Hendrickson shockingly upset Gable Steveson in NCAA wrestling finals
- Hendrickson’s win is arguably the greatest comeback in NCAA wrestling history
In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Wyatt Hendrickson executed what many are now calling the greatest upset in the history of NCAA wrestling. This breathtaking event unfolded on Saturday night in Philadelphia, where Hendrickson faced off against the formidable Olympic champion, Gable Steveson.
What a comeback
Leading up to the finals, Steveson, who had secured a gold medal at the 2020 Olympics, was a heavy favorite to beat the underdog, Hendrickson. He impressively had not conceded a single takedown throughout the entire season, including the NCAA tournament. That said, Steveson appeared to be on track to claim his third national title, especially after he scored an early takedown against Hendrickson.
However, the tide turned dramatically with less than 30 seconds left in the final period. In a thrilling moment, Hendrickson managed to grab hold of a leg, refusing to release his grip. With incredible focus and strength, the Oklahoma State wrestler pulled off a flawless takedown on Steveson.
As the clock wound down, Hendrickson maintained his position and held on until the final buzzer sounded, sealing his victory. The final score was then declared as 5-4 in favor of Hendrickson.

A David and Goliath story
Former UFC double champion Daniel Cormier, who was calling the match for ESPN, was in disbelief with how Hendrickson bounced back and beat his decorated opponent. For DC, it was the most gripping wrestling performance he has ever seen.
“Oh my goodness! Wyatt Hendrickson just beat Gable Steveson!” Cormier enthusiastically shouted. “Oh my god! That’s crazy! Oh my goodness. This is the craziest moment in NCAA history! I’m just happy I could say I was here to watch. I don’t know if I’ve ever been that surprised at a wrestling match.”

For Hendrickson, it was truly a David and Goliath scenario and he’s very happy to have defied what many have expected.
“Today, I took the gold medal, I’m No. 1,” Hendrickson said. “I was telling myself I know I can do this. God gifted me. All week I’ve been looking at David and Goliath and no one thought David could take down Goliath but I did.”
Hendrickson’s upset win over Steveson will go down as one of the most unforgettable moments in NCAA wrestling history. The victory showcased Hendrickson’s talent but also highlighted the unpredictable nature of the sport, where anything can happen in the blink of an eye.
