Merab Dvalishvili, the Georgian powerhouse, recently made headlines with his impressive victory at UFC 306. The win not only solidified his standing in the bantamweight division but also opened up exciting possibilities for his future in the octagon. Becoming a champion is never easy. Merab Dvalishvili achieved what his friend and teammate, Aljamain Sterling, couldn’t—he secured a stunning victory over Sean O’Malley.
The Victory at UFC 306
Dvalishvili’s latest fight at UFC 306 was a perfect showcase of his skill and determination. In an action-packed bout, he reminded everyone why he’s one of the top fighters in the bantamweight division. His blend of striking, grappling, and relentless drive earned him a well-deserved win.
This win has not only boosted Dvalishvili’s profile but also set the stage for what could be an exciting next chapter in his career. With his stock rising, the question on everyone’s mind is: who should he fight next?
Potential Opponents and Matchups
When it comes to choosing Dvalishvili’s next opponent, there are several intriguing options. One potential matchup that has garnered significant attention is against the likes of Aljamain Sterling, the current bantamweight champion. Sterling is known for his grappling prowess and striking ability, which would create an intriguing clash of styles with Dvalishvili’s relentless pressure and wrestling skills.
Another exciting possibility is a fight against Petr Yan, a former champion with a well-rounded game and knockout power. A bout between Dvalishvili and Yan would be a high-stakes affair, with both fighters bringing their unique strengths to the octagon. Yan’s striking versus Dvalishvili’s grappling could make for a compelling contest.
Umar Nurmagomedov
Umar Nurmagomedov is a top contender who’s likely next in line for a title shot. He was ringside at the recent event, closely watching the main fight. As the cousin of former UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov, Umar has a strong pedigree.
With an undefeated record of 18-0 in MMA and 6-0 in the UFC, including three finishes, Nurmagomedov is a rising star. His latest victory was against Cory Sandhagen, where he showcased his skills with five takedowns and over five minutes of control time. Ranked No. 2 in the bantamweight division, he’s the next big hope from Dagestan aiming for a world title.
Personally, I think Nurmagomedov should face Deiveson Figueiredo for a No. 1 contender spot. A single win against a top 15 fighter might not be enough for a title shot right away. However, the UFC has a history of advancing fighters from the Nurmagomedov family quickly.
Deiveson Figueiredo
After winning the title, Dvalishvili expressed interest in defending his belt against Deiveson Figueiredo, the former UFC Flyweight champ. Since moving up to bantamweight, Figueiredo has been on a roll, securing victories over Rob Font, Cody Garbrandt, and Marlon Vera. Despite being on the smaller side for the division, his wins against notable opponents are impressive.
Although Figueiredo might not be the next in line for a title shot, you never know in this sport—surprises are always around the corner.
Additionally, a fight against Sean O’Malley could draw significant interest. O’Malley’s flashy striking and unorthodox style would present a different kind of challenge for Dvalishvili. The contrast in their fighting styles would undoubtedly create a thrilling matchup that fans would eagerly anticipate.
Strengths and Advantages
Dvalishvili’s recent victory at UFC 306 was a testament to his numerous strengths. His wrestling is arguably his most significant asset. Known for his relentless takedowns and top control, Dvalishvili has the ability to dominate opponents on the ground. His wrestling background allows him to impose his will and control the pace of the fight, making it challenging for opponents to find their rhythm.
Another key strength is his cardio. Dvalishvili is known for his incredible stamina and ability to maintain a high pace throughout the fight. This endurance enables him to keep pressing the action and apply relentless pressure, wearing down opponents over the course of three rounds or more.
In addition to his wrestling and cardio, Dvalishvili has developed an increasingly effective striking game. His ability to mix in strikes with his takedown attempts creates a well-rounded approach that keeps opponents guessing. This evolving striking game adds another layer to his already great skill set.
Recent Comments and Team Khabib
Recently, Dvalishvili made headlines not just for his performance but also for his comments regarding Team Khabib and Umar Nurmagomedov. He gave a thumbs down to the team, which raised eyebrows and fueled speculation about potential rivalries. Dvalishvili’s comments suggest that he may have personal or competitive reasons for his stance, adding an extra layer of intrigue to his future matchups.
Team Khabib, led by the legendary Khabib Nurmagomedov, is known for its strong grappling and wrestling pedigree. Dvalishvili’s comments could indicate a desire to prove himself against fighters from this renowned team. Whether this will lead to a future showdown with Umar Nurmagomedov or another member of the team remains to be seen, but it certainly adds excitement to Dvalishvili’s career trajectory.
Dvalishvili blasted Welch on social media after the event, calling the coach ‘unprofessional’ and ‘disrespectful.’
Everyone is asking what happened at start of fight – I was trying to stay professional and focus on the fight only, not wanting to change the energy of the fight. I made no eye contact with O'Malleys team. BUT when the fight started I hear his team calling out to me – Merab..…

Welch shared his perspective in a YouTube video, explaining the comments that triggered Dvalishvili’s reaction.
“First round (he) comes out, and what I said to Merab was, ‘Merab, you need to be patient.’ And that’s when he freaked out,” Welch explained. “He started bucking himself around. I was like, ‘Holy cow, I just said Merab, be patient.’ He must’ve been anticipating that a little bit, but I really wasn’t going out of my way to yell. But I did say that. I guess there is an excessive coaching (rule), but I told Herb Dean some of our callouts have Merab’s name in it, and he said, ‘Nope, nope, nope.’ So, that ended.”
Looking Ahead
Merab Dvalishvili’s rise in the UFC is looking strong. With his well-rounded game and non-stop energy, he’s poised to make a big impact in the bantamweight division. Whether he faces contenders like Sterling, Yan, or O’Malley, or a fighter from Team Khabib, his next fight is bound to be exciting. Dvalishvili’s win at UFC 306 highlighted his abilities and paved the way for what’s next. With plenty of potential matchups, he’s definitely a fighter to watch.
