Derrick Lewis will no longer fight Serghei Spivac in the headlining bout of UFC Vegas 65.

Fan favorite Lewis was slated to take on Spivac in his return to action tonight in the main event of UFC Fight Night 215. He was looking to get back in the winning column after dropping two in a row to Tai Tuivasa, and Sergei Pavlovich, both coming by way of KO or TKO.

UFC Vegas 65 main even gets scrapped on broadcast

Derrick Lewis was forced to pull out of his fight with Spivac after suffering an illness that had him hospitalized. He did not get cleared to participate just hours away from the contest.

The news was announced live on Saturday’s broadcast after the card had already begun. With the cancellation of Lewis vs. Spivac, the main card will now feature five bouts. The originally planned co-main light heavyweight fight between Ion Cutelaba and Kennedy Nzechukwu got bumped up to the headlining spot but will be limited to three rounds instead of the traditional five-round main events.

Lewis was keen to get the job done against Spivac

“The Black Beast” went into the bout as the betting underdog. During the build-up, Lewis opened up about the importance of getting a win at this point in his career.

“I got addicted to winning,” Lewis told UFC. “I’m winning in life, but I also want to win in the Octagon, as well. I miss that feeling — it’s almost been a year since I had that feeling, had that sensation, so that’s what I’m chasing right now is being a winner. I don’t know what it feels like any more,” he said in regards to having his hand raised inside the Octagon. “It’s been so long that I don’t know what it feels like any more. I’m usually fighting more often than this, so we’ll see.

“It’s fine if everyone is underestimating me. It’s great; I love being underestimated. I believe I’ll get the job done, and I believe this is a perfect matchup to get the job done; to go out there and show everyone these skills that I’ve learned over the last few months.”

Derrick Lewis seemed healthy during fight week and made weight on Friday. More details about the reason of his withdrawal are expected to follow soon.
