  • He will not be getting paid more for the Yan fight

Sean O’Malley is set to face a major jump in competition when he competes against the former interim UFC bantamweight champion Petr Yan at UFC 280. Yan is also the current top-ranked contender and a win over him could secure a title shot next for O’Malley.

Sean O’Malley didn’t expect Petr Yan to accept the fight

In an appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, O’Malley shared that he didn’t expect Yan to accept the fight.

“Everyone in the top 10 (was) booked out, everyone in the top ten has a fight. Petr Yan was the only one that didn’t have a fight. Going into that fight, he said, ‘hey, call me out if you win.’ Joe Rogan forgot to hand me the mic after I won so I wasn’t able to call him out after that.

“There wasn’t a good way to call him out. UFC was like, ‘alright, we’ll see. We’ll see if Petr wants that fight, and for some reason, I wasn’t expecting him to accept it, to be honest. It’s a risky fight for Petr.

“He’s not stupid, well maybe he is, he looks at me, he’s a high-level boxer, he’s a high-level MMA fighter, he’s gotta look at me and know I have legitimate skills. I’m not really in the top 10 but I think in his mind a win over me is a huge win.”

O’Malley asked for Henry Cejudo

“Suga” Sean stated that he had asked to compete against Henry Cejudo but wasn’t able to get the fight.

“I asked for that fight. They said obviously the USADA thing, he’s not eligible. Then Petr was all the way up there too and I’m going to take the Petr fight.

“Henry’s inconsistent, who knows if he’s even coming back. He’s fat as f**k. Let’s be real, he’s not making 125 ever again, might not be able to make 135 ever again. I think in his eyes if I had to guess we’re up at 145 but you never know.”

O’Malley isn’t getting paid more for his next fight

Considering how big of a star O’Malley is, it might come as a surprise that he’s not making more money for his next showing.

“I’m not getting paid more now that I’m fighting Petr. On my last contract, fought Pedro and now I’m fighting Petr. I didn’t ask for more money to fight the number one guy. I’m just going to go out there and take advantage of the opportunity and that is to fight Petr. I’m lucky to be in this position.”

O’Malley will take on Petr Yan at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
