- Barber is targeting a return to 115 pounds after one last outing at 125 pounds
Rising prospect Maycee Barber has established herself as one of the most talented future stars in professional mixed martial arts. Before she graced the octagon at 125 pounds, Barber competed in the women’s strawweight division, where a former champion retook the throne last month.
Maycee Barber was not surprised by Weili Zhang’s win over Carla Esparza
In an exclusive interview with James Lynch of Middle Easy, Maycee Barber shared her thoughts on Zhang’s dominant finish of Esparza to reclaim the gold.
“I actually told Mick, ‘hey, I’m going down to 115 lbs. I want to fight Carla and beat her up.’ I don’t think, all these girls, I don’t think they are as good as people say they are. But I wanted that fight. If Weili doesn’t beat her, I’m going down to 115 and I’m going to beat her up.’ I wasn’t surprised by that. I don’t think Carla is that phenomenal so it didn’t surprise me.”
Barber will return to 115 pounds after her next fight
‘The Future’ revealed that she plans to move back down to 115 pounds after her next fight.
“Yeah, I’ve always kind of in the back of my mind been wanting to go back down to 115. There’s a pretty good chance that after this fight, I’m going back down… It’s been a long process but I’m finally at a spot where I’ve healed a lot of things that I needed to heal from. My past cuts to 115 that I feel like just getting a little bit lower of a walk around weight would be great and then make that cut too 115. I would love to fight two divisions.
“The plan is to fight shorter notice fights at 125 and then fight at 115 as well. I feel like that’s a great idea. If everything goes the way I want it to, this will probably be my last fight at 125 lbs.”
Barber will likely line up against Andrea Lee for her next outing at 125 pounds, expected to take place in March 2023.
