A Lesson in Street MMA: Karate poses without simple defense will only get you KOd

I’m all for katas making their way to Street MMA, but there’s a time and place for these movements. Sure, (attempt to) psyche out your opponent before the fight, or even throw out a few forms after an especially sweet victory, but don’t do it in the middle of a match. Furthermore, don’t do it during a match after you just ran away and tripped over a curb, your kata is debased by that stumble, and your opponent will look right through your peacocking and swiftly knock you out.

On top of that, almost no fighter who wears emblazoned jean shorts ever wins a fight. Combine that garb with a kata mid-fight after running away and there’s little chance you’ll make it out of this with your ego intact. It’s science.
