Don’t Be Evil: Google Buys Boston Dynamics

Google’s philosophy has been the same for a long time now, it is a simple phrase that they look to follow; don’t be evil. It seems pretty simple, especially for such a huge company like Google who has unprecedented access to all of it’s users data. Think about every cool Google product, every awesome thing that they offer for free, from Gmail to Google Docs to even, yes, the Android operating system. All of these things are free products with you giving them in exchange the precious data that you leave behind on your exploits on the web.

Essentially, think of the internet as the planet Arrakis and the data must flow like the spice does.

So what in the name of all things Atreides does Google need a government contracted robotics company for? I mean, what kind of non-evil uses does Boston Dynamics have? Boston Dynamics, if you don’t remember, is the company responsible for making some scary ass robots that can run pretty fast without looking that awkward.

Look, I’m a student of science fiction so I have a pretty good idea how this all ends and as much as I’ve trusted Google to this point, this is kind of strange and I fully expect them to be the first ones to introduce fully-functional androids into the market who monitor everything that we do and send back the data to Google’s servers and then serve up ads on the actual android, or something like that. As long as they program the three laws of robotics into them and maybe even that posthumous “law zero” this will all end up okay. Don’t be evil, please.
