Michael ‘Venom’ Page returned to the Octagon at UFC 319, determined to climb into the middleweight rankings.
Best known for his work as a welterweight, Page made waves in February when he moved up a weight class to hand Shara ‘Bullet’ Magomedov his first career loss. Now, the former Bellator star has his sights set on a top-10 ranking in the division. But to get it, he’ll have to go through one of middleweight’s heaviest hitters—Jared Cannonier.
Round 1
Page gets started early, pumping his jab and playing to the crowd. Cannonier inches his way inside and attempts to land with a right hand, but Page ducks out of the way. Page throws a kick to the midsection, prompting Cannonier to catch the leg and fish for a single-leg takedown. Page defends, but finds his back pressed against the fence as Cannonier throws some knees in the clinch. Page shoves Cannonier off, allowing him to separate. Page connects with a clean right hand near the halfway point of the round that puts Cannonier on the mat.
Page allows Cannonier to get back up and immediately starts trash-talking. Cannonier shoots in for a double-leg, but the best he can do is press Page against the cage wall and try to land a few knees in the clinch. Cannonier gives up on the takedown and throws a late combination, but Page’s head movement keeps him out of danger.
Round 2
Page lands another right hand early in the second, then connects with another little more than a minute into the fight that sends Cannonier stumbling halfway across the cage. Page once again forces Cannonier back to his feet. Cannonier tries to close the distance and rip to Page’s body, but he’s just out of range.
Cannonier closes the distance and clinches up against the cage and trips Page, sending the former Bellator star to the mat for the first time. ‘MVP’ pops right back up and breaks the grip, freeing himself from Cannonier’s arms. Cannonier shoots in again with less than a minute to go in the second, but is unsuccessful in getting Page to the mat before the horn sounds, bringing an end to the round.
Round 3
Page comes out and throws a kick to Cannonier’s lead leg before unleashing a combination. Cannonier fires back and partially connects with a right hand. Page overswings with a right hand that takes him off balance, allowing Cannonier to score an easy takedown in the middle of the Octagon with ample time left. Cannonier gets into full mount with three minutes left. Cannonier postures up and throws a few shots. That allows Page to get Cannonier back into half-guard.
Cannonier is looking to set up an arm triangle, but Page recognizes it and defends. Cannonier then transitions to a kimura, but Page again defends. Cannonier goes right back to the arm triangle, but he’s unable to secure Page’s head. Page attempts to buck Cannonier off of him, but he’s unsuccessful with a minute left in the fight. Page is content to ride the remainder of the round on his back as Cannonier attempts a late flurry of ground strikes just before the bell.
Official Result: Michael ‘Venom’ Page def. Jared Cannonier via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).
