In his 13th walk to the ring, YouTube sensation Jake Paul strapped on the eight-ounce gloves once again, this time for a clash with boxing icon and former WBC middleweight world champion, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
‘The Problem Child’ rides into the Honda Center in Anaheim having won five straight fights, including a sixth-round knockout against BKFC star ‘Platinum’ Mike Perry and a unanimous decision win over legendary pugilist ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson.
For Chavez Jr., it will be his first time competing since defeating former UFC standout Uriah Hall last July. ‘La Leyenda Continua’ has won three of his last four, the lone loss coming against another former UFC star, Anderson Silva.
Round 1
Paul opens the opening round with a left that scrapes Chavez’s guard. A left hook partially connects for Chavez Jr. Paul attempts a right downstairs but comes up short. Paul swings two more right hands to the body, both of which are blocked by Chavez. Paul offers up a combination, but again, it hits the guard of his opponent. Paul is dictating the action early on with his jab, pushing Chavez back. Paul connects with a right hook around Chavez’s guard.
Chavez is being forced on his back foot and allowing himself to be outworked. Paul lands a right hand before heading back to his stool, looking confident.
Round 2
According to the DAZN broadcast, Chavez Jr. did not land a single clean punch in the first round.
Paul comes out in round two, hiding behind his left jab. Chavez is still reluctant to throw anything. Paul swings a right hand to the body, but Chavez blocks it away. Paul is hitting Chavez’s guard with straight punches as Chavez continues to sit back and absorb. Just two minutes into the second stanza, fans are already starting to boo. Chavez Jr. Paul closes the round with a combination, punctuated by an uppercut that partially lands on Chavez’s chin.
Round 3
Chavez Jr. is clearly down two rounds. Still, he’s choosing to absorb everything Paul throws at him without a single answer back. A body shot from Paul thuds into Chavez’s midsection. The boos are really raining down now as Chavez continues to do absolutely nothing. Paul fires his left hand at Chavez’s head and body.
From his son’s corner, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. is putting his hands on his head and desperately shouts for Chavez Jr. to do something. Chavez finally responds by throwing a single left hook that partially connects, but it’s simply not enough.
Round 4
Thus far, Chavez has landed one punch in the first three rounds.
Paul kicks things off, firing a right to the body, followed by more left hands from the YouTube star. Paul rips another couple of shots to Chavez’s body. Chavez complains that it was low, but no dice from the referee. Paul connects with a stiff one-two. Chavez finds a right hand on the inside. Chavez is finally starting to push Paul back, but Chavez gets caught by a right. Chavez responds with a right hand over the top. A left hand from Chavez connects, and Paul responds with one of his own.
By far the best round of the fight for Chavez thus far, though the bar is fairly low.
Round 5
Paul connects with a right cross early in the fifth. Chavez throws a two-punch combination, but neither shot lands. Chavez is beginning to move his upper body, but his feet aren’t fast enough to cover the distance. Paul plants a right on Chavez’s guard as Chavez was attempting to close the gap. Paul goes back to his left hand and offers up an uppercut that’s blocked by Chavez’s guard.
A long right hand from Chavez lands, but there’s zero power behind it. Chavez breaks the gap and throws a short right on the inside. Chavez is trying, but it’s simply not enough to close the gap.
Round 6
A combination from Paul lands in the first 30 seconds of the round. Paul comes right back with a right uppercut-left hook combo on the inside. Chavez throws a right hook downstairs, followed by a left hook upstairs. Chavez is throwing more, but it’s one shot at a time. No combinations, no follow-up shots.
A right hand finds the target for Chavez Jr. in the final minute of the sixth. Paul scores a shot to the midsection. That prompts Chavez to come to life, launching an attack, but Paul counters.
Round 7
Paul continues to slap Chavez’s face with a barrage of left hands, stifling Chavez’s offense and forcing the former world champion to repeatedly reset himself inside the ring. Paul feints downstairs and comes back up with an uppercut that breaks the guard of Chavez—his best punch of the fight thus far. A heavy one-two from Paul connects on Chavez’s guard in the final few seconds of the seventh, which should result in another round for Paul on the scorecards.
Round 8
Chavez scores with a stiff jab early and follows it up with an overhand right. Paul fires back, landing a shot to the body before throwing a three-punch combo. Chavez connects with a left hook on the inside and then a right hand. Paul comes back with a few strikes of his own. This is by far Chavez’s best round of the fight. Despite that, he was still adequately outworked by Paul. Chavez rips a pair of left hooks into Paul’s head and body to end the eighth.
Round 9
Chavez comes out and connects with a pair of right hands in close. Paul connects with a stiff left. Chavez continues to complain about low blows that are clearly not low. Paul fires more hooks downstairs, and Chavez chops down with a right hand. Chavez swings and misses with some wild backhands as Paul is trying to keep his attacks compact. Chavez lets a combination go on the inside, and Paul lands downstairs with the right.
Chavez knocks Paul’s head back with a right hook, followed by a rear uppercut. Chavez is starting to turn it up, landing a left that has the crowd finally on their feet.
Round 10
Chavez finds a short left hook on the inside. Paul strikes back with a chopping right hand as he continues to counter Chavez with sharp punches. Paul lands a body shot, followed by an uppercut up the middle. With one minute left in the fight, Chavez lands a stiff jab. Two right hands from Chavez land. Chavez is finally letting his hands go as the crowd roars him on. Unfortunately, it won’t be enough as the final seconds tick off the clock, sending us to the scorecards for what should be a dominant and decisive decision victory for ‘The Problem Child.’
Official Result: Jake Paul def. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. via unanimous decision (99-91, 97-93, 98-92)
