Welterweight mainstay Neil Magny returned to the Octagon on Saturday night for a scrap with streaking Aussie standout Jake Matthews at UFC Perth.
Coming off a big second-round TKO over Elizeu Zaleski in August, Magny looked to keep his momentum going while simultaneously snapping the three-fight win streak of Matthews, who scored an impressive 69-second submission over Chidi Njokuani in his last appearance.
Round 1
Magny immediately attacks Matthews’ lead leg as he circles the Octagon. Magny is looking to get his jab going early as Matthews stalks forward and throws a furious uppercut that just misses the mark. Matthews comes right back, landing a right hand before briefly clinching up against the cage. Matthews is looking confident as Magny continues to pump his jab. Matthews starts punishing Magny’s lead leg with some kicks before landing a clean lunging jab.
Magny rushes in with a three-punch combo, but Matthews evades. Matthews blitzes and Magny clinches up, pinning his opponent up against the fence. Magny lands a takedown with just under a minute to go in the round. Matthews looks for a guillotine, but being pressed against the fence, he can’t get enough torque. Matthews adjusts, reversing position and getting full mount with the guillotine still locked in.
The referee appeared to call for the stoppage, believing Magny had gone to sleep. However, Magny popped right back up after the bell, and the referee ruled that the fight would continue onto the second round.
Round 2
Mattews comes out with a two-punch combo against the fence, followed by a stiff jab. Matthews clinches up against the cage, but Magny breaks away. Magny shoots in for a takedown, but nearly finds himself in another guillotine. Matthews used the position to take Magny’s back in the middle of the Octagon with three-and-a-half minutes left in the stanza.
Magny rolls and ends up in a full mount. Matthews works to cinch in an arm triangle choke from the mount. Magny is desperately trying to pop his head out and does. Matthews maintains side control, but it’s not long before Magny gets him back into half guard. Matthews maintains top control throughout the remainder of the round, likely going up 2-0.
Round 3
Magny once again shoots in for a takedown and finds himself defending a guillotine choke. Matthews attempted to reverse position, but Magny scrambled his way back up. Matthews clinches against the fence, looking to keep control of his opponent. Magny reverses scores a takedown against the fence, immediately falling onto full mount. Matthews wrestles his way out of the unfavorable position and gets back to his feet.
Magny again gets the upper hand, putting Matthews on the mat and locking in a d’arce choke. Matthews has no choice but to tap out, handing Magny an impressive come-from-behind victory in the third round.
